Anacostia: River of Recovery: Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources site on the Anacostia River. Natural Resources Defense Council: NRDC’s fact sheet for the Anacostia River. Anacostia Watershed Initiative: Links to the DC Office of Planning’s Web site about the plans for developing the Anacostia River waterfront. Chesapeake Bay Foundation: Focus on the Anacostia River: Includes downloadable "State of the Anacostia" report and other good information. Funding opportunities: For DC: DC Mini-Grant. The Chesapeake Bay Trust has partnered with the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office to administer a Mini Grants program for Bay and river education projects in Transportation Assistance for DC High Schools --- AWS can assist you in funding transportation to and from meaningful Bay experiences (canoe trips and/or wetland plantings). Please call and speak with one of the environmental educators for more information. For Maryland: Maryland Department of Natural Resources Aquatic Resources Education Grant. This is a reimbursement grants program for public/private schools and school systems. Grants of $1,000 per school and up to $4000 per school district are available to conduct aquatics related projects. Chesapeake Bay Trust Mini Grants. Mini Grants Now Available Up to $5000! Applications for the mini grant program are accepted on an on-going basis. Decisions are made within 4 to 6 weeks from the date the grant is received. The Trust will not reimburse for items purchased/trips taken before a decision has been made. Visit the Trust’s website to download the new application and new instructions and criteria. Other information: Stewardship and Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences. As part of the Chesapeake 2000 Agreement, DC and Maryland have committed to provide a meaningful Bay or stream outdoor experience for every school student in the watershed, beginning with the class of 2005, before graduation from high school. Maryland hopes to have three experiences: one during elementary school, a second during middle school, and another during high school.
