River TripsAs part of the Watershed Explorers and River Habitat education programs, AWS encourages teachers to bring their students to the river. This strengthens the concepts students have been learning about in the classroom. On the Anacostia River, students see the interaction between the land use and the water, learn about the history of the river and its pollution issues, and view wildlife. Teachers who have participated in our teacher training have scheduling priority. As with our restoration activities, we do not charge fees for providing these programs, but we do request donations to help cover our costs. AWS offers two ways of seeing the river first-hand. Field Study via CanoesThis 5-6 hour excursion takes place between Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Maryland and Anacostia Park (direction is tide and wind dependent). Students will learn basic canoeing techniques and conduct water quality tests. Because the trip length is 5 miles, students must be in 6th grade or above. Maximum group size is 27 people total. Canoe trips can be scheduled in the fall until mid-November and from mid-April through the summer. Students will have the opportunity to conduct water quality tests and view wildlife from the pontoon boat. There is an optional worksheet that the students can complete during the trip. Students are usually pre-K through 6 th grade. Two school classes/groups can be scheduled in one day (one morning trip, one afternoon trip), with the group that remains on shore exploring the Bladensburg Waterfront Park. Maximum group size is 29 people total. Pontoon trips can be scheduled in the fall until mid-November and from late-March through the summer.
