Contribute to Earth Day 2008 and Help Us Pickup Mother Earth! When AWS and its original partners met for the first Anacostia Watershed River Cleanup and Rally Celebration, they managed to pull together a handful of interpid volunteers who donned their own work gloves, shouldered their own trash bags, and set out to do the impossible—clear the Anacostia River of trash and other floating debris. Curiously enough, fourteen years later, that idea—to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning the river—has really caught on. So much so that in 2007, our Earth Day event included 13 major sponsors, 30 partner organizations, and more than 2,200 volunteers! Thanks to all of them, we managed to remove a total of 49 tons of trash from the river in a single day.

Supplying this ever-expanding army with the tools and materials needed to get the job done has become increasingly more difficult; and, as our volunteer numbers grow each year, we feel it our duty to thank them for their hard work as best we can. Whenever there has been a need to purchase additional work gloves or tools for our many cleanup sites, or whenever we have needed to supply more food or bigger and better entertainment for our volunteers during our rally celebration, people like you have been there to see us through.Your generous gift in support of Earth Day 2008 will be particularly special this April. Not only do we expect your dollars to outfit a record volunteer at our river cleanup sites, this is the first year you and all of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area will hear about our event as it happens over the radio waves. On Saturday April 26, our media sponsor, WPFW 89.3 Pacifica Radio, will cover our Earth Day Rally in a special hour-long broadcast. That broadcast will feature a 20 minute simulcast of the music composed for our special Earth Day performance of "Green Dance" by Global Site Performance and choreographer Marylee Hardenbergh. Remember, if you can't make it to the rally site to see this spectacular event, listen to your dollars at work by tuning your radio to 89.3 at 12:00 noon.
Don't forget to return to this web site to find out how much trash we collect during Earth Day! |

Earth Day 2008 Sponsor Orgnaizations

Our Earth Day Sponsors provide crucial funding and in-kind services in support of the Annual Anacostia Watershed River Cleanup & Rally Celebration. Without each of these organizations, we would be unable to feed to our volunteers, dispose of the trash we collect, print our tee shirts, pay our event planning staff, or do many of the other things necessary to make each Earth Day a success. Our profound thanks go out to all of the committed employees and representatives of these organizations who have helped us make a real difference in the Anacostia Watershed. If your organization or corporation would like to support AWS's Annual Anacostia Watershed River Cleanup and Rally Celebration, please download, complete, and mail back the Coporate Sponsorship Form linked below. Each of our Earth Day Partner Organizations has played a special role in developing and executing the many activities that have gone into the making of the 14th Annual Anacostia Watershed River Cleanup & Rally Celebration. Many of these groups have partnered with us to clean up sites along the Anacostia River that are important to them. Others have provided valuable techincal and professional support by helping us develop our entertainment program, locate cleanup supplies, secure barges and boats for trash transport, and complete many other important tasks. AWS thanks each Partner group for the tremendous effort they have made to make Earth Day 2008 a resounding success!
