The AWS Community Stormwater Improvement Project

By: Ashley Stanton, Restoration Project Manager

In June of 2013, AWS received grant funding from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Chesapeake & Atlantic Coastal Bays 2010 Trust Fund to engage communities within Prince George’s County in stormwater management projects and stream restorations.  This is an amazing opportunity, as it allows for a more targeted approach to reducing and treating stormwater that enters the Anacostia River.  According to the report put out by the Anacostia Watershed Restoration Partnership, the Anacostia is impacted by 1,000’s and 1,000’s of lbs of nutrients, sediment, and pollutants every year that travel to the river via streams and tributaries found within the watershed.  AWS strongly believes that we can reduce these numbers by focusing stormwater management efforts within communities living near some of the smaller tributaries.

To do this, we are targeting the Riverdale, Hyattsville, and University Park communities first.  Our goal is to work with local community groups to implement stormwater management practices, like Low Impact Development (LID), and stream restorations.  We hope to disconnect as many people as we can from the current stormwater infrastructure that feeds our streams.  To achieve this we are actively engaging with schools, churches, civic associations, friends of groups, local and county governmental agencies, and others.  The goal is to install stormwater management tools that work, but also demonstrate why they work.

As we being to install a variety of projects across these project sites, we will incorporate volunteer opportunities and educational activities into our work.  We want everyone in the Anacostia community to get a better understanding of how they can impact the sediment and nutrient loads entering our waterways.  This is going to be a huge endeavor for us, but we are looking forward to making some positive change in the watershed.  We hope you’ll join us for the ride!
