Donna Edwards supports green infrastructure, will you?

Represenative Donna Edwards is a big part of the Anacostia River's fantastic House Delegation (which includes Chris Van Hollen, Steny Hoyer, and Eleanor Holmes Norton).  Everyone in our delegation is a big supporter of the river, but Represenative Edwards is noteworthy for her longstanding support of green infrastucture.  In an interview published today, she makes several statements very relevant to our current legislative efforts in Prince George's County.

At a time when the region is embracing green infrastructure, the Prince George's stormwater bill (CB-15) offers a redevelopment standard that is "too little, too late" for the economic, aesthetic, and environmental health of county communities.  A healthy community has all of the following: a healthy economy, a healthy environment, and green and attractive areas to live, work, and shop.  An improved CB-15 could help the county realize that vision.

I just sent the following email to the Prince George's County Council on behalf of the Prince George's County Clean Water Coalition.  Please write to your council member before the committee meeting on Monday, June 20, and 2:30PM.

Good afternoon Madam Chair and members of the council,

I hope this note finds you well. As you consider CB-15, I wanted to quickly bring to your attention some timely remarks from Rep. Donna Edwards on the subject of green infrastructure. As mentioned by Victor Ukpolo, my colleague from Clean Water Action, an investment in green infrastructure pays off in reduced flooding risks and reduced flood insurance costs for the county's citizens (PDF).

Rep. Edwards agrees:
"We know that using green infrastructure is the best, most cost-effective way to address flooding because green infrastructure relies on the natural environment to manage stormwater."

She also talked about the green success story in Edmonston:
"The two keys to Edmonston’s success were grant assistance and a commitment to building a sustainable community. Due to stormwater runoff, Edmonston had flooded four times in the previous decade. For a community of just 1,300 people, this was unsustainable. At a cost of $1.3 million, Edmonston’s green street brought good jobs, sustainable flood control, low-cost LED streetlights, and quality of life improvements for residents. "

But is green infrastructure just an environmentalist's cause?
"I think the reality is a tendency to associate the word “green” with the word “liberal,” but the truth is that disasters from stormwater occur all over the country and across all ideologies. The facts of green infrastructure are not political. The example of Edmonston is testament to how we can combine smart economic development with sound environmental stewardship. I believe that the more communities like Edmonston benefit from green infrastructure, the less politicized the issue will be."

I encourage you to read the whole interview

I urge you, on behalf of the Prince George's Clean Water Coalition, to improve the redevelopment stormwater standard in CB-15. We as a county can make a higher standard work so that we get both needed redevelopment AND improved quality of life for our residents.

Thank you and have a wonderful afternoon,
Brent

Contact county council TODAY and ask them to improve CB-15

Email members of the THE committee TODAY and ask for an amendment to CB-15 requiring a minimum 1" redevelopment stormwater standard.
