Students from Mt. Rainier Elementary School Collect Seeds of Native Plants

By: Carey Goldman, Stewardship Fall Intern

To kick off November the Stewardship Team and Education Team paired up with a group of fifth and sixth graders from Mt. Rainier Elementary School.  Jorge, Chris, Emily and myself led this event which gave these students an opportunity to experience the watershed first hand, via boat and by walking along the newly opened Anacostia River Trail extension at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park. The trail is beautiful, and the kids really enjoyed the extra long boardwalk. About halfway down the trail the students participated in seed collection collecting both, Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) and Late Flowering Boneset (Eupatorium serotinum). Both native plants will be used in our meadow restoration project.

The kids really enjoyed this activity and came away covered in the light fluffy seeds, a testament to their hard work. They were able to collect two big bags of seeds, which will be planted in the spring. Not only did the students get to help AWS by collecting seeds, but they got an opportunity to learn about the River, its forests, wetlands and its meadow habitats and how they help protect the river. They also learned about the importance of keeping the Anacostia River clean. To end the day the students got to play on the retro rail car that sits at the head of the new Anacostia River Trail. All in all it was a great event and everyone had a lot of fun.
